13 sessions of radiotherapy finished today much to my pure delight. I've got all the normal side effects i.e. indigestion, hiccups, heartburn, lethargy and large red blotches on my chest. It has been quite an ordeal to get through.
Nothing is easy when you have cancer it saps all the strength from your body and without the expertise of another group of wonderful people who know how to put you at ease, I seriously don't know how people get through it. Every morning I said to Susan I really didn't think I could go through it again but with her encouragement to get me there and the radiographers ability to build you up enough to make you get on to that steel table I managed it.
Each day that went past I found myself in a lot more pain from my back and other areas. The radiotherapy weakens your muscles and along with it any damage to muscles from previous injury. I was particularly suffering with an old back injury. I went to see a consultant in pain control at St. Nicholas Hospice yesterday who was brilliant. She prescribed a TENS machine which is often used for pregnant women........
Sorry we have a delay the narrator has fallen asleep. Oh no he's awake again!
.......It sends an electric pulse through your muscle and creates a nerve block so your brain cannot receive a message that you are in pain. Therefore although I can't say the pain has disappeared it is so much better.
My blue disabled parking badge arrived this week too and my wheelchair should be delivered next week. So hopefully I will be all set to enjoy things a little more than I have just lately.
I have come to a point now in the therapy where I hope to see some sort of change in the tumour. It wont be for another 3 or 4 weeks that Dr. Gillingan who is my consultant and all his colleagues will be able to see if there is a better outlook on the tumour or chemotherapy may have to be reconsidered. Obviously I hope the radiotherapy will have had the desired effect but still looking at the young kids and all the different age groups in that clinic...........
Sorry the narrator is now struggling to get his very heavy cardigan off!! Oh he's back! No he's not he's got hiccups now this is the longest entry I've ever had to type. Back again. No his back is hurting again and now he's not comfortable hold on. Here he is.
..... just give you a morale boost along with the caring staff it makes you realise you must never give up.
It's been 4 months and the further I get through it the more confident I get that I can shake this. I see lots of people come out of the wards so much better than when I've seen them arrive it gives you hope and good luck to all of them I hope they can go on to live long and happy lives.
He's very tired now will let you know how he gets on soon!

Big well done to you Vic...

The desire to sleep is also hereditary I am afraid; your lovely Gran always used to pat her bed lovingly each morning and say "see you soon"! Mind you her other phrase "roll on death lets have a long sleep" isn't one I would recommend. We cyclists often get tired and one of us after a G&T is often found snoring in front of the television - or listening with his eyes closed as he like to put it!
The overwhelming fatigue is normal. On more than one occasion whilst cycling home after a session I have wanted to just lay down in the road and go to sleep. As you say its a strange sensation but it does eventually go away!
However, the temptation to go to bed at 9 is still very alluring!

Hi Vic and Sue
Thank goodness the radiotherapy has finished, and you have the wheelchair to look forward to - obviously the top of the range model with go-faster stipes. I am off for a spot of diving next week so Christine will be in touch with you. What a fantastically strong couple you are, please stay that way. Take care, Jane and Christine xxx
Great news to hear that the Radiotherapy has ended Vic- you deserve a medal to have got through it.
Bit of a worry about the wheelchair though, especially if it does have go faster stripes! After that big Insurance claims file Andrew showed us at your wedding you will need to wear L plates!
love to you both, Jane Parker xx
Hi lil bruv and Susan, it was fantastic to speak to you today on the phone. Seems so long since I have seen you, but this will be put right when we get home from Egypt. Glad they have managed to lessen your pain and that you are eating chocolate again, its such a relief. We'll be thinking of you when we are watching Spurs beat Newcastle, sunday evening in a local smokey English style pub. We miss you both so much. And you are both constantly in our thoughts. Thank you so much Susan for bullying/loving my lil bruv. Love from Rosemarie, John and Jake XXXX P.S we are having terrible problems with the phones out here. X
hi uncle vic
been in eurodisney for 5 days and really missed your blog - back home now, had a good time except for the queueing which was made all the more horrendous by those people who refused to respect personal body space and pressed themselves up against us - how i didn't punch someone was beyond me!! meant to be a family place but the adults were worse than the kids! hope your pain eases soon thinking of you x x
hiya Vic and Suz,
TENS unit - brilliant idea - I should have thought of that sooner.
Glad your Radiotherapy is over. At least your back can start to heal now you don't have to deal with the steel table. We just got back from our driving trip all over California and up to the Oregon border. Went thru San Francisco and over the Golden gate bridge and thought of you and the trip you made to us from there with your trusty Tom Tom. Saw some beautiful scenery including snow.
Hope you got the exercises. The before and after pics were from Kyms daughter Hayley. Thought they would make you smile!! They are all wishing you well too. We all send our love and prayers that the radiation kicked the crap out of your tumor.

Jersey very wet on the friday so we went to the Zoo we were like 2 drown rats - lovely but still we had fun. Anyway when you are feeling better give me a call for a chat and a proper catch up. Thinking of you both, love and cuddles to you both

Hi Vic,
Sorry not to be have been in touch before, but we only recently found out you were unwell when I bumped into Andrew at Rosedale. I was asking him about the FSC coffins you were going to let me have details of and he said you has been in to sort out your desk.
We also didn't know you and Susan had tied the knot, so our warmest congratulations to you both.
Everyone at Rosedale sends you best wishes and now we know about your blog spot, we'll keep an eye on how you're doing.
Being a bit of a technophobe I've never done a blog before, but Simons daughter Hattie (aged 12!!) is showing me what to do.
Take care
Anne
